What?! Sign-language interpreter at Mandela services was a phony

Dec 11, 2013, 4:43 PM | Updated: 4:44 pm

Wow. Did this really happen?

A fake sign-language interpreter was onstage during Tuesday’s memorial service for Nelson Mandela. In the video, the woman in the left-corner box is doing the “real” translation into sign language and you can see it bears no resemblance to what the man onstage was doing.

This imposter, whoever he was, stood mere feet away from the world’s leaders, including President Obama, and pretended to sign their remarks.

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry at this ridiculous sight. On one hand, it is cruel to mock the deaf and deny many of them around the world from participating in the Mandela ceremonies. On the other hand, “Saturday Night Live” would be hard pressed to come up with a funnier, more inappropriate sketch.

Wow.
