Brain In a Jar
That’s the name of a book about to be published, written by a dear friend. (Nancy and I are godparents to her son.) The book is about her father, a neurosurgeon who knew Alzheimer’s ran in the family, and knew he was at high risk for it. His father died of Alzheimer’s. He did everything and anything to fortify his brain against the creeping darkness, to no avail. It is a powerful, touching story, and beautifully written. You can pre-order it at Amazon.com.
There really was a brain in a jar, on his desk, for as long as his daughter can remember. It was not until after her father died that she discovered it was his father’s brain, no doubt preserved as a reminder of the possibility of his own fate, and as inspiration for the fight against it.
