PHOENIX — A former Chandler mayor known for his advocacy of the city’s arts scene died earlier this month.

Jerry Brooks passed away at the age of 88 on Jan. 14, the city announced Tuesday in a press release.

Brooks was Chandler’s mayor from 1984-88. He was a key figure in the construction of the Chandler Center for the Arts, which opened in 1989.

“Without the vision of Mayor Jerry Brooks, Chandler Center for the Arts might not be here,” CCA General Manager Michelle Mac Lennan said in the release. “He was a vital advocate and supporter of arts and culture in our community. Mayor Brooks’ vision, leadership and passion will continue to be an inspiration to all of us.”

Brooks also served as a board member for the nonprofit Chandler Cultural Center, the fundraising arm for the CCA.

The CCA established the Jerry Brooks Legacy Society in 2011 to help financially support the center.

More recently, Brooks was the chair of a committee that focused on expanding the performing arts scene in the city.

A memorial service will be held for Brooks at the arts center on Saturday at 10 a.m.
