Proposals for new Scottsdale city markers are up for public approval

PHOENIX – Whether you live and work in Scottsdale or not, you could have a say in what the city’s new gateway markers look like.

Scottsdale Public Art and city leaders are winding down a survey to determine – with the public’s help – the winning proposal for the marker project.

The submissions from four locals and one out-of-state artist have been up for debate since Jan. 6. Public comments are being accepted until Jan. 31.

The arts group said in a post: “The new markers will be designed to reflect Scottsdale’s unique character. Consequently, there may be more than one design awarded as Scottsdale’s character can change depending on location.”

Finalists are Jon Arvizu of Scottsdale; John Randall Nelson, Tempe; Team Coart, Phoenix; MoD a+p, Phoenix; and Ty Gillespie of Paonia, Colorado.

The proposals are available for viewing in person through Sunday at the Arabian Branch library near Thompson Peak Parkway and McDowell Ranch Road.

The viewing then moves to the Mustang Branch near Mountain View Road and 90th Street from Monday through Friday.

If you don’t feel like making the trek to a library, staying at home is an option – the presentation has been posted online.

Voters will be asked to rank the designs, comment on the designs. They will also be asked if they live or work in Scottsdale.

After the public comments have been completed, a panel will decide who wins.

The final choice will be revealed in February.
