Meet McKenzie Carey from Pigeon Forge, Tenn., who earlier this month wore a purple dress with a frilly pink skirt to perform her dance routine at a city pageant.
But it wasn’t tap skills that caught the Internet’s eye, making a video of her routine to Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb” go viral.
Carey was born with a mitochondrial disease. According to the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation:
Mitochondria are responsible for creating more than 90% of the energy needed by the body to sustain life and support growth. When they fail, less and less energy is generated within the cell. Cell injury and even cell death follow. If this process is repeated throughout the body, whole systems begin to fail, and the life of the person in whom this is happening is severely compromised.
Her father, who in his jeans, T-shirt and red baseball cap twirled the 12-year-old who can’t walk around the stage has also touched the hearts of millions.
Get the tissues — this father’s amazing love will guarantee serious water works.
A website about McKenzie has been created to raise awareness on mitochondrial diseases, visit “Hope for McKenzie” for more info.
