PHOENIX – Mesa city leaders broke ground this week on a multimillion dollar development that will expand Falcon Field Airport by 23 acres.

The $65 million project will include hangar, office and manufacturing spaces among the six buildings, and a staging ramp for aircraft and vehicle parking, the East Valley city said in a press release.

“The Mesa Hangar project will help grow the aviation sector of our economy,” Mayor John Giles said in a statement.

“It is a cornerstone of a lot of exciting business expansion occurring in northeast Mesa. Combined with additional aerospace business growth in the city, it demonstrates the strength of Mesa’s workforce, the quality of our infrastructure, and our customer-friendly business environment.”

Hangar size will run from 3,600 square feet to 14,400 square feet and will feature high ceilings and doors wide enough to fit corporate jets and specialized fixed-wing aircraft.

Hangar manager Randy Hansen said the site at the northwest corner of the field will be “state-of-the-art, energy efficient” and solar-powered.

Falcon Field was built before America’s entry into World War II. By fall of 1941, cadets from Britain’s Royal Air Force were training there.

The wartime aviation hangars were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.
