St. Mary’s Food Bank accepting backyard citrus donations until March
PHOENIX — St. Mary’s Food Bank is taking donations of grapefruit, lemons, oranges and other citrus until the beginning of March.
St. Mary’s will accept donations at its Phoenix location — 2831 N. 31st Avenue — and Surprise location — 13050 W. Elm Street — from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays for the next seven weeks.
The food bank doesn’t have the resources to pick neighborhood trees, which is why it is asking for resident donations.
Last year, Jerry Brown, a spokesman for the food bank, said the nonprofit organization accepted citrus donations through its early March deadline because it remained viable longer than usual because of cooler temperatures.
In November, the food bank distributed holiday food boxes to more than 12,000 families for Thanksgiving during a 3-day period.
Brown told KTAR News 92.3 FM that those donations helped feed between 70 and 80 thousand Arizonans.
The food bank also accepts cash donations through its website.
