A pants-free event on the Phoenix light rail, a Valley restaurant finds itself among Yelp’s top 5 eateries in 2020 and the return of the Barrett-Jackson classic car auction.

Here are some stories that headlined the news cycle, both locally and internationally, over the weekend.

Phoenix restaurant lands in Yelp’s top 5 places to eat in 2020

A Phoenix restaurant has been named among Yelp’s top five places to eat in 2020.

Cocina Madrigal Tacos and Tequila, which is located at 16th Street and Broadway Road, was named the No. 5 restaurant for the new year.

Yelp recommended ordering the wild mushroom enchiladas. Other menu options include crispy salmon in a tomatillo sauce and achiote-braised chicken tacos.

Chef Leo Madrigal, who was a corporate chef at Z’Tejas Southwestern Grill for more than 20 years, opened the restaurant in 2018.

Barrett-Jackson comes to Scottsdale with record number of cars for auction

The Barrett-Jackson classic car auction rolls back into Scottsdale this weekend and it’s set to be a record-breaking experience in its 49th year.

Almost 2,000 no-reserve vehicles will cross the block starting Saturday until Jan. 19 at WestWorld in Scottsdale, eclipsing the record for any public collector car auction of 1,800 vehicles set last year.

The high volume of cars up for auction is causing the vehicle display space to expand into the WestWorld Equidome south of the arena.

The auction officially begins on Monday, with the first two days of the event being preview days.

No pants, no problem: Phoenix light rail event promotes right to bare legs

Many metro Phoenix light rail riders will be feeling a draft Sunday afternoon as they participate in a cheeky annual ritual.

Phoenix is once again taking part in the Global No Pants Subway Ride.

Comedy collective Improv Everywhere started the tradition in New York in 2002, and pants-free rides are planned in about 20 cities in North and South America, Europe, Australia and Asia this year.

The Phoenix version, which is in its 12th year, is organized by Improv AZ and includes a party at The Churchill in downtown Phoenix.

Glendale Glitter and Glow lights show to end annual holiday display

Holiday season has come to a close but one West Valley city isn’t letting it go quietly into the night.

The city of Glendale hosted its annual Glendale Glitter and Glow light show that celebrates the end of the holiday season and the start of a new year on Saturday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The 1.6 million LED light show will feature colorful hot air balloons, music from several bands and other performances happening throughout the evening in downtown Glendale.

Inaugural Rocky Point cruise setting sail on Sea of Cortez voyage

The abbreviated inaugural cruise season out of Rocky Point, a popular south-of-the-border destination for Arizona vacationers, embarks this week.

The first Treasures of the Sea of Cortez cruise will set sail from Rocky Point, aka Puerto Penasco, on Thursday for an 11-night voyage.

The ship Astoria, which can accommodate 550 passengers, will span the Gulf of California, or Sea of Cortez, and stop at seven ports, including Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas.

The British-based line originally planned a six-cruise season that was scheduled to start Dec. 7, but the first three sailings were canceled because the Astoria’s arrival from Europe was delayed.

We want to hear from you.
