Who is Dignity Health?

PHOENIX — Dignity Health may be the focus of World Class Arizona, but what do you know about the health care provider?
“First of all, we are three hospitals: Chandler Regional, St. Joseph’s and Mercy Gilbert and soon we’ll open in the West (Valley),” said Linda Hunt, senior vice president of operations, president and CEO of Dignity Health in Arizona.
But Dignity Health is more than just three hospitals. It traces its roots all the way back to 1854, when eight Sisters of Mercy arrived in San Francisco to care for those suffering from cholera, typhoid and influenza. Just three years later, they opened St. Mary’s Medical Center.
In 1895, the Sisters or Mercy opened St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix. After expanding over the years, it became Dignity Health. The name may have changed and the technology improved, but the goal is the same: Deliver quality care.
Fast forward to 2014 and Dignity Health is committed to giving people the care they need.
“We’re (part of) an accountable care organization called the Arizona Care Network where we have 2,500 doctors,” said Hunt. “We have all types of people helping us do a better job of caring for patients — not only when they’re in the hospital, but keeping them well.”
Dignity Health recently began offering a program dedicated to caring for those on Medicare and took over behavioral health care for Maricopa County.
