PHOENIX — A man was killed after being struck by a train late Wednesday night in Flagstaff, and his father was found dead nearby the next morning, according to police.

Flagstaff police said initial reports indicated two people were standing on the railroad crossing, between eastbound and westbound trains, when one person was struck by the westbound train.

The man, identified as 28-year-old Travis Haudley of Lukachukai, Arizona, was pronounced dead at the scene near Route 66 and Ponderosa Parkway.

Around 10 a.m. Thursday, the body of 47-year-old Emerson Haudley of Chinle, Arizona, was found near Ponderosa Parkway and Butler Avenue, a few hundred yards from the train tracks where his son was killed the night before.

Police said there were no signs of trauma in the death of Emerson Haudley, who was lying in the snow in an area not easily visible to pedestrians or traffic.

Authorities believe cold overnight temperatures may have played a role in his death, which was being investigated by the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Flagstaff police were working with Burlington-Northern Santa-Fe Railroad personnel to obtain and review on-train video recordings.
