PHOENIX — With the start of a new decade right around the corner, a new batch of New Year’s resolutions are here as well.

One common goal is to lose weight and make better choices for a healthier lifestyle.

Setting realistic goals and taking it one day at a time is key to success, according to one Valley doctor.

“When you think about having to lose 50 pounds, that seems like a huge deal but it’s just one pound a week and you can do that,” Dr. Yazhini Srivathsal with Banner Health told KTAR News 92.3 FM.

Planning ahead, creating a routine and sticking to it is are other great ways to stay committed to your goals.

Exercising for 30 minutes a day and keeping healthy items stocked in your fridge and pantry will also help you avoid unhealthy treats.

On days you’re craving a high-calorie coffee or sodium packed snack, Srivathsal says to ask why those cravings are popping up.

“Understand why you want a quick fix and maybe you can do other things like 5 squats or 10 push ups instead,” Srivathsal said.

If you work in an office setting, be mindful of how often you stand up and walk around.

Chances are, it’s not nearly as often as you think it is.

Srivasthsal suggests downloading apps onto your phone that remind you to drink more water and take a short walk to keep yourself active.

Most importantly, don’t give up.

“If things don’t go according to plan, it’s okay,” Srivathsal said. “Tomorrow is always a new day.”

We want to hear from you.
