PHOENIX – A driver accused of shooting at border officers and leading them on high-speed chase on Interstate 10 nearing metro Phoenix has been taken into custody.
Two others were also arrested Monday. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a release posted online the suspect raced past Border Patrol agents at an immigration checkpoint about 20 miles south of Casa Grande around 2:40 p.m.
Pursuing agents were shot at from the car, a 2014 Ford Taurus. Agents did not fire back, the department said, and no one was injured.
Arizona Department of Public Safety officials said the chase came to an end on the freeway near Sacaton, about 32 miles from Tempe.
The other two people in the car were found inside the trunk, the Border Patrol said.
None of the three had been publicly identified yet.
An investigation was ongoing.
