From the “Dumb Criminals” file …

“We’re glad that no one was hurt,” says Phoenix Police Sgt. Jamie Rothschild.  He’s talking about an armed robbery at a gas station near Guadalupe and Alma School in Mesa. It was 1:30 in the morning on Friday, Nov. 8, 2019.

“Our suspect enters the Chevron store, and you can see when he comes in that we’ve got a good view of who he is,” says Sgt. Rothschild.

The man walked across the store, past all of the cameras. He went into the bathroom for a couple of minutes and came out wearing a beanie style hat. Sgt. Rothschild says it’s clear he was trying to hide his identity.

The man told the clerk he had a gun, grabbed the cash and ran away, but he left behind some great before-and-after pictures.

A man did some shopping at the Circle K at 10th Street and Van Buren.

Sgt. Rothschild says, “It’s what happens after he leaves that makes us want to find him.”

It was Sunday, Nov. 17, 2019 at about 2 a.m.

After leaving the store, the man spotted an item in an unlocked car.

“So this suspect reaches in and takes the item,” says Sgt. Rotschild. “When the victim sees what he’s doing, he takes out his cellphone and begins recording the suspect.”

The thief then punched the victim in the face as two other thugs walked up. One had a tire iron and the other acted like he had a gun.

After stealing the victim’s phone, they all ran away.
