Branch of Mesa Public Library becomes autism certified

PHOENIX — A branch of the Mesa Public Library is the latest organization in the city to become autism certified.
The Dobson Ranch branch was awarded the certification by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards, the city announced Thursday in a press release.
“At Mesa Public Library, we value hospitality and demonstrate that value by providing safe and inclusive spaces for all to freely learn and grow,” Mesa Public Library Director Heather Wolf said in the release. “For us, participating in the training from IBCCES and receiving certification aligned perfectly with our organizational values and will allow us to better serve our community.”
As part of the certification, public-facing library staff had to complete training in autism and sensory awareness.

The library is also developing calming kits and a spectrum story time that that will be introduced in 2020, according to the release.
“IBCCES is excited to partner with the staff at Dobson Ranch Library,” Myron Pincomb, IBCCES board chairman, said in the release. “This designation shows their commitment to serving all individuals and to enhance visitors with autism or sensory needs experiences.”
About 60 Mesa organizations have become autism certified.
Mesa became the first city in the United States to become autism certified in November.
