PHOENIX — With the warm weather months finally in the rearview mirror, the city of Phoenix’s 2019 paving season has come to a close.

It ended up being the most expansive paving season in history, with more than 250 miles of streets getting a new surface during the year, the city announced Tuesday in a press release.

About 195 local street miles and 60 arterial and major street miles were paved as part of the city’s $90 million annual street maintenance program through Transportation 2050, the city’s plan to improve its transportation systems over the next 35 years.

“Our residents deserve a big thank you for their support of T2050 that funded this program, for their feedback as we identified the greatest need throughout the city and for their patience while the Street Transportation Department undertook its largest and most comprehensive pavement maintenance program,” Phoenix City Councilwoman Thelda Williams said in the release.

“Our first season wraps as a success and we look forward to accomplishing much more.”

Other accomplishments from the season include more than 150 street miles that received preservation treatment and the installation of about 5,600 new wheelchair accessible sidewalk ramps.

The 2020 pavement season will begin once the weather heats up, according to the release.
