PHOENIX — A 76-year-old hiker who went missing Wednesday in the Superstition Mountains has been found safe, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.
Sgt. Joaquin Enriquez said Peter Fisher was found “awake and alert” and was taken in for medical evaluation.
Fisher had been hiking with a group when he headed back to his car due to fatigue, Enriquez said.
After the rest of the group returned to the First Water trailhead around 2:30 p.m., they couldn’t find Fisher and reported him missing.
About an hour later, they found a message from Fisher on one of the hiker’s phones indicating he had gotten lost.
The sheriff’s office deployed five ground teams while the Arizona Department of Public Safety and Phoenix Police provided helicopter assistance.
Fisher remained missing Thursday, and MCSO was continuing search efforts.
