Amazon opens brick-and-mortar bookstore in Scottsdale

PHOENIX — Amazon has returned to its roots in Arizona with a brick-and-mortar bookstore opening in Scottsdale on Tuesday.
“Books are in our DNA at Amazon,” spokeswoman Jeanine Takala told KTAR News 92.3 FM.
“It’s how we started, so it really made sense to have this be our entry into physical retail.”
The online retailer, which now carries millions of products, has 19 other Amazon Books stores in the U.S., according to a press release.

The Scottsdale Quarter store, near Scottsdale Road and Greenway Parkway, is the company’s first in Arizona.
The 4,000-square-foot store will employ about 20 people and also sell toys, games, home items and electronic devices.
“Amazon Books is built entirely around our customers — what they’re loving, what they’re buying, how they’re reading,” Takala said.
“We’ve tried to bring that experience of them shopping online into an offline space.”
Takala said the company uses its 20 years of bookselling information to create the “highly curated” shelves that will be frequently rotated based on demand.

All of the products chosen for the store are new releases, bestsellers or rated 4 stars and above online.
The company has more than 45 shops nationwide, including Amazon Go convenience stores and others not focused on books.
The Scottsdale location will be open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
