PHOENIX – Authorities said a woman was killed and a pregnant woman was taken to the hospital, where she gave birth, after a head-on collision on Grand Avenue northwest of downtown Phoenix during Tuesday morning rush hour.

The accident occurred when a 28-year-old woman who was 35 weeks pregnant lost control of her minivan after it hit a tire that was in the road, according to the Glendale Police Department.

The minivan crossed the median heading northwest on Grand (U.S. 60) near Missouri Avenue and struck a car heading in the opposite direction driven by 52-year-old Karen Render of Surprise.

Render was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other driver suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital, where her healthy baby girl was delivered.

The road was closed in both directions between 43rd and 51st avenues around 7 a.m. It was reopened around 1 p.m., according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Detectives determined that neither speed nor impairment were factors in the crash, police said.
