PHOENIX – A 5-year-old Mesa company that specializes in eco-friendly graphite processing held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday for new headquarters near Falcon Field.

The facility on Greenfield Road south of the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway will allow Urbix Resources to create up to 100 science and labor jobs, according to a city of Mesa press release.

“This is a fantastic moment in our young history,” Urbix co-founder Nico Cuevas said in the release.

“To see how this relatively small facility of just 31,000 square feet will have such positive impact in the U.S.’s Energy Storage Critical Mineral Strategy, and also in the world, is super motivating and exciting.”

The ceremony was attended by city officials and community business leaders.

“We could not be more proud to celebrate the success of an innovative company that was founded in Arizona,” Sandra Watson, Arizona Commerce Authority president and CEO, said in the release.

“Urbix is advancing sustainable technologies that are revolutionizing energy storage and creating new jobs for our residents.”

Urbix, which purifies graphite for lithium-ion batteries and other uses, started up in 2014 at the LaunchPoint technology accelerator in downtown Mesa.

“We’re proud that Urbix Resources continues to grow and invest in Mesa,” Mayor John Giles said in the release.

“They have made a real commitment to their future and the city of Mesa, which is a great endorsement of our business-friendly culture.”

Earlier this year, the Greater Phoenix Chamber presented Urbix with the 2019 IMPACT Award for exceptional innovator for businesses with 250 employees or fewer.
