PHOENIX – Already a star in Arizona politics, now U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema has been tapped for national prominence, named to Time magazine’s 100 rising stars list released Wednesday.

The Democrat earned a place on the 2019 Time 100 Next, a new entry that goes along with the magazine’s annual selection of the 100 most influential people in the world.

She was included in the leaders category that also named Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg, Republican U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York, and #MeToo advocate and former American Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman.

“Between her service to Arizona and the country, and her athletic achievements in Ironman competitions, Senator Kyrsten Sinema is always moving forward, fast,” Democratic U.S. Senate hopeful Mark Kelly of Arizona wrote.

The list “spotlights 100 rising stars who are shaping the future of business, entertainment, sports, politics, health and more,” Time CEO Edward Felsenthal wrote.

Sinema, who was sworn into office in January, has been building a reputation in Washington as a proponent of bispartisanship.

The 43-year-old began that journey in the U.S. House of Representatives, where she served from 2013 until winning her Senate seat.

“Senator Sinema leads with Arizona as her compass and gets things done for everyday Americans,” Kelly said.

The rising stars are “eager to defy the odds – and fight for a better future,” the magazine’s executive editor, Dan Macsai, said in the introduction.
