Water officials deny APS bid to pump ‘poor groundwater’ west of Buckeye

PHOENIX — Arizona’s Department of Water Resources has told Arizona Public Service it cannot drill for water west of Buckeye for its Palo Verde plant.
The utility claims the “poor groundwater” had no purpose but to cool the nuclear power plant.
“I completely disagree with that statement,” said Noel Carter, general manager of the Buckeye Water Conservation and Drainage District. “It’s already been used out here for a very long time to irrigate crops, among other things.”
APS wanted to tap 10,000 acre feet per year just west of Oglesby Road, north of MC-85, which is enough water for 3,330 homes.
“Even exempt well owners use it in their homes for drinking water, bathing, and home municipal use,” Carter said.
APS issued a statement pleading its case and remaining committed to the cause.
“Palo Verde Generating Station has been a responsible and innovative user of recycled water to generate clean energy for more than 30 years,” the statement said.
“Approval of this application would have continued that innovation and stewardship of our resources. We are aware of the decision, which is disappointing, and we are reviewing it to decide our next steps.”
