PHOENIX – Five years after launching talks on how to improve White Tank Mountain Regional Park, Maricopa County parks officials will host an open house Sunday to show off Willow Campground.

The party to celebrate the campground northwest of Phoenix will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

“The area had previously been used by the park for overflow camping and small youth groups,” County Supervisor Clint Hickman said in a press release.

“This area provides the perfect setting for those seeking a more primitive camping experience.”

About 44,000 square feet were mapped out for the campground.

First-come, first-serve reservations can be made online starting Monday through Nov. 30 for camping dates that begin Dec. 1.

Improvements at the county’s largest regional park include a shower house, more parking and a dishwashing station.

The park covers 30,000 acres starting at Olive Avenue close to Loop 303 in the West Valley.

Anticipating more camping interest in the future, County Parks and Recreation Director R.J. Cardin said three more areas have been set aside for expansion.

Campsites include a picnic table, a fire ring with a barbecue grate, and a 12-foot by 12-foot level tent pad.

The park opens daily at 6 a.m.
