PHOENIX — The Phoenix Police Department, in partnership with Iron Mountain Shredding and St. Mary’s Food Bank, is hosting Shred Day Phoenix to raise awareness for identity theft on Nov. 9.

The event, which will run until 2 p.m., is being held in front of the Comerica Theater on the corner of  Washington Street and 4th Avenue.

“You can drive up with your personal documents – things that have your information like a social security number, date of birth – stuff that thieves can steal from you,” said  sergeant Maggie Cox, media relations representative for the Phoenix PD. “You can get that stuff shredded and there’s no limit to the amount of bags of stuff you can bring to get shredded.”

To participate in Shred Day, all that is requested is two non-perishable food items to be donated to St. Mary’s.

Cox noted that identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in America because it’s easy to commit but hard to solve.

Identity theft can affect someone credit score, or even empty a bank account.

She recommends that anyone affected by identity theft, or looking for more information, should visit the police department’s website.
