PHOENIX — A school bus was smashed after hitting a median on an East Valley freeway and traveling about 2,000 feet into the desert on Thursday.

Witnesses said the driver of the Tempe Union High School District bus lost control of the vehicle near the eastbound Loop 202 and 40th Street at about 9:25 a.m., the Arizona Department of Public Safety said in a press release.

The bus then crashed into a median and struck several barriers before exiting the freeway.

It then entered the desert and went through an irrigation canal before coming to a stop.

The bus driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was transported to a local hospital and was evaluated before being released.

DPS said it is investigating the cause of the crash.
