PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation is now offering two-week, full-time programs for construction training.

Previously, the agency only offered a 16-week Construction Academy program that held class three nights a week for three hours.

The free training helps members of “economically disadvantaged groups” start careers in highway construction, according to a Monday press release.

Participants in the two-week program graduate with commercial driver’s license permits, safety training certification and certification to work as “flaggers” on highway projects.

They also learn how to do construction math, read construction plans and build resumes, according to the release. Those who have perfect attendance also receive free gear.

“The new Jump Start program gives those who can participate full-time a fast track to careers in one of the best industries in Arizona,” Steve Navis, manager of ADOT’s On-The-Job-Training Supportive Services Program, said in the release.

“Whether you can commit a full two weeks or a few nights a week over a longer period, we’re tailoring these high-quality adult education programs to you.”

Seven participants in the first cohort of the full-time program graduated in October. The second cohort is scheduled to graduate Friday.

Upcoming full-time programs are:

  • Feb. 3-14 in Tucson
  • March 2-13 in Phoenix
  • March 30-April 10 in Nogales
  • May 4-15 in Globe
  • June 1-12 in Show Low

The next part-time programs will be offered in Phoenix in spring 2020 and in Prescott during the summer.

We want to hear from you.
