Learn all about electric cars at expo in Mesa this weekend
PHOENIX — If you’ve ever thought about getting an electric car but don’t know enough about them, now is your chance to learn if it’s right for you.
Salt River Project is having an expo Saturday in Mesa where you can learn all about electric vehicles and see the latest models from Tesla, Jaguar, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Chevy and Nissan.
“An electric vehicle is just like a regular car, except it has far less emissions, it has far better acceleration,” said Kathy Knoop, principal environmental scientist with SRP. “They’re quiet, they’re comfortable and they’re just all around awesome cars.”
SRP is hosting the event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Red Mountain Park near Brown and Power roads in partnership with the city of Mesa. Mayor John Giles is scheduled to attend.
“Mesa is a very sustainable city, and they’re really looking to help their residents understand more about electric vehicles and going electric,” Knoop said.
At the expo, you’ll also get to talk to people who own electric vehicles and hear how they use their households’ electricity to power their cars.
There will also be charging stations and demonstrations on how to charge electric vehicles right from your garage.
“Most folks don’t know that you can just plug this into the 120-volt outlet in your garage and charge your car overnight, so you don’t even have to buy any specialized equipment” Knoop said. “When you buy the car, it actually comes with a mini charging station.”
She added you can upgrade your outlet to 240 volts to charge your car faster. You can even program your car to start charging during off-peak hours when power companies have lower prices on some plans.
