ADOT wrapping up placement of more visible wrong-way freeway signs

PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation said Wednesday it is finishing up its project to place more visible wrong-way signs on freeways.
The $2.1 million project placed larger and lower signs on Interstate 17, I-10, U.S. 60, State Route 51, Loop 101 and Loop 202, according to a press release.
The new signs placed along exit ramps are 48 inches by 36 inches, compared to the previous 30 by 24 signs.
The bottom edge of the signs were placed 3 feet above the ground, rather than 7 feet, so they are closer to drivers’ line of vision.

More signs, measuring 5 feet by 8 feet, were placed on bridges and signs structures above the left lanes of the freeways.

The project also added more white paved arrows pointing in the correct direction of travel on exit ramps.
ADOT recently won national and state awards for its work to reduce wrong-way drivers on Valley freeways, including for its thermal camera system on I-17.
