Scottsdale-based tech institute CEO retiring; replacement waiting in wings

PHOENIX – The CEO of a Scottsdale-based technician-training educational center has announced she will step down at the end of October, after 35 years with the company.
Kimberly J. McWaters went from receptionist to president of Universal Technical Institute. She informed the board of directors of her retirement decision Monday. She will remain on the board in a nonexecutive role.
Her last day was scheduled Oct. 31.
“I am proud of our brands, the quality reputation we have earned with students, employers, educators and regulators and the outcomes we deliver for students. We have always been a force for good,” McWaters said in a statement online.

The institute has 13 campuses – two Valley sites are located in Avondale and Phoenix – stretching from California to New Jersey.
Jerome Grant, who has been serving as executive vice president and COO for two years, has been promoted to the top spot.
“The company has a rich history, amazing resilience, a clear and powerful purpose, and incredible potential,” Grant said in a statement.
He will assume his new duties Nov. 1.
The 54-year-old company specializes in training technicians for work in automotives, motorcycles, marine maintenance and repair, welding and machining.
