PHOENIX — Pizza Hut is testing two concepts at a Phoenix location beginning Wednesday.

The national pizza chain is introducing a pizza topped with plant-based meat at the 36th Street and Thomas Road location starting at 10 a.m., the company announced in a press release.

The garden specialty pizza will also be served in a round pizza box.

The pizza will be sold in-store only for $10 while supplies last and all proceeds Wednesday will go to Phoenix-based sustainability organization Arizona Forward, according to the release.

“This revolutionary round box — the result of a two-year journey — is the most innovative packaging we’ve rolled out to date,” Nicolas Burquier, Pizza Hut’s chief customer and operations officer, said in the release. “The round box was engineered to make our products taste even better — by delivering hotter, crispier pizzas.”

Pizza Hut partnered with sustainable food company Zume to design the round box, which contains less overall packaging than a square box.

It is industrially compostable, locks the pizza into place and takes up less room, according to the release.

“This box is a win, win — it will improve the pizza-eating experience for our customers and simplify the operating experience for our team members,” Burquier said.

The garden specialty pizza contains a plant-based Italian sausage produced by MorningStar Farms called Incogmeato.

The pizza will also be topped with onions, mushrooms and banana peppers and it will be served exclusively on Pizza Hut’s large, hand-tossed crust.
