PHOENIX — The Phoenix Zoo will celebrate the completion of two major projects this weekend.

The zoo will unveil its renovated elephant enclosure and new amphitheater this weekend.

In honor of the reveal, the zoo will host zookeeper talks, wildlife shows and tours on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Guests will also have the opportunity to get up-close with some animals.

The Giants of the Asian Realm is home to the zoo’s three female Asian elephants: Reba, Sheena and Indu.

The renovation gave the elephants more than double the exhibit space. The trio now has two new yards of varied terrain with trees, logs, toys, hay feeders and water troughs.

With the addition of the Doornbos Discovery Amphitheater, the zoo has a space that allows them to showcase birds, reptiles and small mammals. This weekend, guests can see the first official shows at the Amphitheater at noon and 2 p.m.

Starting Oct. 24, the zoo will host animal shows Thursdays-Sundays at 10:30 a.m., noon and 1:30 p.m.

Both projects were funded through the zoo’s Pride Campaign. The $12.1 million fund also provided the zoo with the support to upgrade its species conservation research facilities and programs. The final project that the campaign will cover is upgrading habitats along the Africa Trail.

We want to hear from you.
