PEAK YOUR APPETITE

Cruz To 7th Avenue

Lots of downtown Phoenix folk have long been fans of the iconic Fry Bread House on 7th Avenue, just north of Indian School. Set in a modest little house behind a handful of parking spaces, the FBH recently made a move to a bigger space in the former Pancho’s restaurant on Indian School at 10th Street. However, not only do downtowners get to keep their beloved fry bread joint, but they gain a venture by the De la Cruz family — the gang behind El Zocalo Mexican Grille and El Sol Mexican Café & Bakery, both in Chandler, as well as Mango’s Mexican Café in Mesa.

So what’s up? The De la Cruz family have opened Phoenix Burrito House in the tiny space and plan on keeping the menu as simple as it sounds: burritos, tacos, and maybe a side or two. We stopped in for a carne asada burrito, added some grilled jalapenos, and sat down for our fast-casual lunch.

A+!

The tortilla (made by the De la Cruzes’ East Valley bakery) was sheer perfection. The meat was simple and void of gristle. Other fillings were fresh and bountiful. Plus, the burrito was, like, six bucks. It came wrapped in foil for easy eatin’, and accompanied by a red and green salsa that had decent bite.

The place officially opens with a Grand Opening party Saturday, Jan. 4. So if you stop by manana, expect some free food samples and a bit of a fiesta-like vibe. Otherwise, just expect good, inexpensive food.

Phoenix Burrito House opens with breakfast burritos at 7 a.m. daily, and stays open ‘till about 8.
