Billboards around Phoenix spark conversation about domestic violence

PHOENIX — It takes an average of nine attempts for a victim to break free from an abusive relationship, according to a Phoenix nonprofit.

Chrysalis, a trauma-certified domestic violence organization, helps more than 1,400 individuals and families in the city leave abusive and unhealthy relationships each year.

During October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Valley drivers may see billboards displaying simple sentences that lead to a much greater conversation.

“It’s very brief verbiage, but very direct and to the point,” Patricia Klahr, Chrysalis president and CEO, told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Monday.

The billboards display powerful, thought-provoking messages such as “It’s not your fault” and “You’re not overreacting,” with the goal of reaching potential victims who are questioning their relationship or considering seeking help.

“We were really wanting to get the attention of victims or people who are in the precontemplation stage,” Klahr said. “People may be thinking, is this a healthy relationship or not?”

The billboards can be seen along Interstate 17, State Route 51, and I-10.

“We also have billboards in the Melrose District as well,” Klahr added. “What we did is try to place the billboards where we most often serve clients.”

The billboard campaign is in conjunction with R&R Partners, an ad agency in downtown Phoenix.

Chrysalis has been helping victims escape domestic violence in Phoenix for nearly 37 years.

The organization provides resources as well as other programs to help victims and offenders change their lives for the better.
