PHOENIX – The armed teen shot and killed by a Glendale police officer Sunday morning was one of multiple shooters during a melee at an illegal warehouse party, authorities said Monday.
The Glendale Police Department issued a press release identifying the person killed as 17-year-old Levy Isaac Madueno Santibanez.
Police responded around 2:45 a.m. to multiple shots fired at industrial district near 67th and Northern avenues.
When the first officer, a four-year veteran of the force, arrived, about 200 people were fleeing the area and multiple people were firing guns, the release said.
The officer shot one armed suspect, Santibanez, who was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said.
After the incident occurred, police said the suspect had a weapon but it wasn’t clear whether he’d fired it.
According to the release, investigators determined some of the approximately 60 rounds fired during the incident came from the handgun found in Santibanez’s possession.
Police were unaware of anybody else being shot.
An officer suffered minor injuries after being hit by a fleeing vehicle, police said Sunday.
The investigation is ongoing. Anybody with video or other information pertaining to the incident was asked to call the Glendale Police Department at 623-930-3000.
The shooting was the 28th involving law enforcement in the Phoenix area this year. Later Sunday, another police shooting occurred in Buckeye, bringing the total to 29.
