PHOENIX — Phoenix Rescue Mission is holding the grand reopening of its Mission Possible Café this week, complete with new menu items created by a celebrity chef.

The nonprofit dedicated to helping the homeless will celebrate the newly designed restaurant near 15th Avenue and Van Buren Street on Thursday at 3-6 p.m.

The cafe, which opened in 2017 and is run by former and current Rescue Mission residents, will feature new dishes created by Food Network chef Beau MacMillan.

“We’re rocking out a killer Cuban sandwich for the next couple of months, and then just a refreshing salad that I think is going to be very popular on the menu,” MacMillan told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Arizona’s Morning News last week.

The celebrity chef said besides contributing to the menu, he’s also mentored residents who work in the cafe.

“Everybody needs a second chance, and some of these stories that I heard … from some of these people that were homeless a year ago, or, you know, have overcome addiction … have really got a chance to kind of just relive and have a life for themselves through food,” MacMillan said.

In addition to preparing formerly homeless people for the workplace, the cafe also gives 100% of its proceeds to the mission.

“Not only are you changing lives by eating at the Mission Possible Café, but you are in for one seriously delicious meal,” Michael Simmon, the nonprofit’s director of social enterprise, said in a press release.

We want to hear from you.
