Gregory Cole,59, was inside his home near 40th street and McDowell just before 9:00 p.m. on Friday, May 18, 2012.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door.
“He got up, opened the door and much to his shock and pain, the suspect began beating him in the face with a bat,” said hoenix Police Sgt. Darren Burch.
Burch said Cole was seriously hurt.
“His wife was home and witnessed the whole thing,” he said.
The motive is a mystery. Burch said this could be a case of mistaken identity.
If a stranger knocks on your door, Burch said do not open it, but don’t hide and pretend no one’s home. Just let the stranger know that you’re not interested and they should leave.

A Circle K at 51st Avenue and McDowell was robbed in the early morning of Tuesday, May 1, 2012.
Burch said the suspect may have been armed, but he wasn’t the smartest criminal in town.
There are very clear pictures and video of the suspect walking into the store and up to the counter. Only then did he decide to cover his face with a black bandana — too late to conceal his identity.
The clerk wasn’t hurt and the suspect got away with the cash, but someone is sure to recognize him.
