Your life can go from uneventful to forever changed in a moment. Just ask 23-year-old Scott Dexheimer.

“I had been thinking about what I was going to tell my girlfriend about my day when I got home, all of a sudden I wasn’t sure if I’d ever get to see her again,” he said.

Monday, March 28th, 2011, Scott had worked late at ASU that day so it was after dark, about 8:00 p.m. when he got off the light rail at 19th Ave. and Montebello in Phoenix.

“I had just crossed Montebello and was walking to the park and ride,” he said. “It was fairly well lit, wasn’t thinking anything of it and then two guys walk up from behind me and told me to empty my pockets and that they had a gun.

“I said, ‘are you kidding me’ because at first I didn’t think they were serious.”

But they were very serious and were not happy that Scott didn’t have any cash on him.

“Then they told me to empty out my bank account, and they walked me down to an ATM and I told them I couldn’t withdraw much money because I’m a student, I don’t have much money,” he said. “I withdrew $200 and they took that and then they left.”

Phoenix Police sergeant Darren Burch said there were multiple crimes committed.

“So now we’re committing kidnapping, forcing him to another location to take money out of his bank account,” he said.

But the gunman made a big mistake.

“The guy was pretty stupid to just walk in front of the ATM,” Dexheimer said.

Burch said that’s the beauty of the situation, that they have a great photograph of one of the suspects.

“A black male, 17-20 years of age, approximately 6-feet in height, but thin build with a slight afro-style haircut,” Burch said. “Second suspect is basically the same age, he’s a little bit shorter, 5-foot-8, and the same kind of build.”

Burch said there’s a $1,000 cash reward attached to this case.
