PHOENIX – The hit television show “Friends” debuted in 1994. So did “ER.” It was the year Olympic skater Nancy Kerrigan was attacked, “Schindler’s List” won Best Picture and the Bodyguard soundtrack won Album of the Year.
It’s been a long time since one Phoenix man was murdered, nearly 16 years, but police still hope they can break the case.
On June 15, 1994, 43-year-old Daniel Loss, a Maricopa County Parks and Recreation employee, was working at Ben Avery Shooting Range in the far north Valley.
He heard gunshots off in the distance, but they weren’t coming from the range, Phoenix Police Sergeant Paul Penzone said.
“He drove his vehicle in the area where he heard the shooting coming from,” Penzone said. “It was his intent to inform the shooter that they should not discharge the weapon anywhere other than on the shooting range.”
Penzone said that when he found the rogue shooter, Dan radioed the range office to report that it looked like the person might be packing up and leaving.
“That was the last time anywhere heard from Dan,” Penzone said. “Later that day a fellow employee found Dan lying dead at the scene. He had been shot and killed.”
He left behind a wife and two children.
It’s been a long time since Dan’s murder, but investigators believe that someone knows something that might help break this case open.
