PHOENIX — Tempe Town Lake is now two decades old.

The city will mark the lake’s 20th anniversary with a community celebration on Saturday.

The celebration will focus on the history of the lake and look toward what’s to come with activities on both sides of the lake.

On the north side, there will be a volleyball tournament, fishing, an adventure zone, paddleboarding and sailing tours.

The south side will feature an arts zone, entertainment, food trucks and a boardwalk experience with a scaled Sixth Street market.

The event will run from 11:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is free to the public.

Last fall, the Tempe City Council approved the Rio Salado and Beach Park master plan, a blueprint that outlines future improvements to the lake over the next 20 to 30 years. The city will highlight those visions at the event.

The plan focuses on programming, infrastructure and use of land and water space around the lake.

According to the city’s website, the concept for the lake was created in 1996 at Arizona State University, and it officially opened to the public on Nov. 7, 1999.

We want to hear from you.
