PHOENIX – A recent study found that people who own dogs tend to live longer.

So Phoenix-area residents are getting the opportunity this weekend to reduce their mortality rate by 24% while saving an animal’s life, all at no cost.

As part of the Bissel Pet Foundation’s national Empty the Shelters day, both Maricopa County Animal Care and Control shelters will offer free adoptions for dogs and cats of all ages Saturday.

The county shelters, which will be open for adoptions from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., are located at 2630 W. Rio Salado Parkway in Mesa and 2500 S. 27th Avenue in Phoenix.

All county adoptions include vaccinations, spay/neuter, microchip and, when applicable, license.

As of Wednesday afternoon, more than 600 dogs and 40 cats were listed online as available from the county shelters.

If you can’t find the perfect fur baby at a Maricopa County shelter Saturday, try the Arizona Humane Society or Arizona Animal Welfare League.

AHS, which has 1,100 dogs, cats and other animals at its shelters and foster homes, is reducing its adoption price to $25 for all pets and waiving fees for dogs with the organization for at least 30 days from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

All AHS adoptions include vaccinations, spay/neuter and microchip and also come with a bag of food, a free follow-up vet exam and 30 days of pet insurance.

AHS does adoptions at two Phoenix campuses, 1521 W. Dobbins Road and 9226 N. 13th Ave., plus the PetsMart stores at 1733 S. Stapley Drive in Mesa and 4380 N. Miller Road in Scottsdale.

The Arizona Animal Welfare League, the state’s oldest and largest no-kill shelter, is waiving its fees on all adoptions from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at its east Phoenix facility, 25 N. 40th Street.

All adoptable AAWL pets have been microchipped, spayed/neutered and vaccinated and come with 30 days of insurance.

We want to hear from you.
