PHOENIX – One of Phoenix’s most popular hiking areas has a new and improved look.

The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department held a grand opening last week to unveil upgrades to the Piestewa Peak trailhead.

Visitors to the Phoenix Mountains Preserve hiking area on Squaw Peak Drive northeast of Lincoln Drive will now be greeted by a 60-foot-tall concrete and steel entry monument.

Parking was made easier, with 22 additional spaces and a new 104-foot pedestrian/vehicle bridge connecting two parking areas to improve traffic flow.

Other new features include a building with six restrooms and a ranger station, three water fountains, one water bottle fill station and four ramadas.

Additionally, two existing ramadas were renovated and improvements were made to sidewalks, curbs, lighting and signage.

Family members of the mountain’s namesake, Lori Piestewa, took part in Friday’s ceremony. Piestewa, who served in the Iraq War, was the first Native American woman to die in combat.

The upgrades are part of an ongoing Phoenix Mountains Preserve infrastructure project funded by a voter-approved initiative.

We want to hear from you.
