PHOENIX — The Cowboy Cookie Sandwich at Chuckwagon restaurant in Suprise was named the winner of the West Regional Neighborhood to Nation contest by General Mills.
A deli-meat and cheese sandwich dressed with honey and sandwiched between two cranberry-orange scones, the sandwich was submitted by Chuckwagon food service manager Todd Skinner.
The inspiration for the sandwich came from cattle drivers who would need something that could endure for long periods of time. Thus, the Cowboy Cookie Sandwich was invented.
The Chuckwagon restaurant is located in Happy Trails Resort, a 55-and-older community that sees regular seasonal turnover. Chuckwagon, however, is open year-round.
Skinner will take home $5,000 and will share a $1,000 donation to K-9 Konnection, a non profit that rescues animals.
The grand prize winner was a Strawberry Pandowdy from SELECT restaurant in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Kevin Brown, the executive chef for SELECT received a total of $10,000 and $2,000 for the Greer Community Ministries.
