PHOENIX – Arizona’s most popular tourist attraction, the Grand Canyon, will start shutting down some services at the North Rim in two weeks, ahead of changes in weather.

The seasonal closure of certain facilities was scheduled to start at noon Oct. 16, according to the National Park Service.

Rangers will staff the campground, entrance station and visitor center from time to time and the Backcountry Information Center will be open daily until Oct. 31 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed for lunch from noon to 1 p.m.

The Grand Canyon Lodge and restaurants; shower and laundry facilities; the campground store; ranger programs; canyon trail rides; and the visitor center bookstore will all be closed.

Winter travel conditions could also be in effect on State Route 67, park officials said.

The 43-mile road is the only way to reach the North Rim from Jacob Lake and is also the lone connection to U.S. 89A.

Plenty of amenities will remain open.

Bright Angel Point Trail; scenic drive (although it could be closed in bad weather); gift shop; a self-service gas station (not accepting cash); and port-a-potties will be available to park users.

Backcountry overnight camping requires a permit requested in advance.

The North Rim will reopen in mid-May.

The Grand Canyon’s South Rim, which has better weather than the North Rim, stays open all year.
