PHOENIX – The Arizona Humane Society is seeking a forever home for a playful, people-loving dog with health issues that was rescued from an East Valley backyard over the summer.
In the heat of July, the Gilbert Police Department seized two distressed dogs that were chained up in the direct sunlight, the AHS said in a press release Sunday.
After a judge awarded custody of the dogs to the AHS, one of them was quickly adopted.
Paco, however, has faced a variety of medical issues and remains in the shelter.
First, the 5-year-old male pit bull was successfully treated for tick fever. Then it was discovered he had Valley fever, which could require medication for the rest of his life.
On top of that, Paco developed skin masses that could indicate a form of blood cancer common among pit bulls and exacerbated by exposure to the sun.
While the growths will require monitoring and might need surgery, Paco has a good quality of life, according to AHS veterinarians.
He adores people and loves playing with balls and rope toys, showing no ill effects of the abuse he endured, according to the release.
The AHS is waiving Paco’s adoption fee for a home that can give him the care he needs.
