Storms knock out power for thousands across Phoenix area

PHOENIX – Thousands of customers were without power for parts of Monday as storms wreaked havoc across the Phoenix area.
Nearly 5,000 customers, most of them with Salt River Project, experienced outages in the afternoon, according to outage maps.
Those were cleared up within hours, but another wave of storms left about 10,000 customers without electricity for what was expected to be hours, mostly in central Phoenix, in the early evening.
SRP customers were hit hardest with more than seven significant outages in Phoenix and Paradise Valley impacting more than 7,600 customers around 6:30 p.m.
The biggest outage of the evening hit more than 1,800 Arizona Public Service customers between Thomas Road and Culver Street and between Seventh and 20th streets.
Nearly 800 APS customers east of downtown Phoenix, between Moreland and McKinley streets and betwewen Fifth and 11th streets, also lost power.
The APS outages were restored at around 9 p.m.
