PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation received an award last week for its public safety campaign meant to reduce wrong-way crashes.
The Phoenix Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America gave ADOT the award for its “Drive Aware, Get There” campaign.
The project used public safety announcements on TV, press releases, a website and social media posts to help drivers avoid wrong-way crashes.
The campaign shared information on what to do if a driver sees a wrong-way vehicle and how to stay safe when driving at night, when most wrong-way incidents occur.
The installation of a thermal camera detection system pilot project on Interstate 17 and hundreds of larger and lowered “wrong way” and “do not enter” signs on freeway ramps and overpasses were also part of the campaign.
According to an email from the Department of Public Safety, 101 wrong-way drivers had been arrested for DUI in Arizona this year through Sept. 8.
