PHOENIX – The West Valley suburb of Goodyear recently received two public safety grants from the state for a total of almost $74,000, including one for an electric police motorcycle.
Both grants were from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to the Goodyear Police Department Traffic Unit for the grant period ending Sept. 30.
The city received $23,955 to purchase an all-electric Zero Motorcycle, according to a press release sent earlier this month.
According to the Zero website, the rechargeable two-wheelers save money on fuel, don’t create exhaust and are highly maneuverable. They also are silent, allowing officers to hear better and patrol stealthily.
The police department also received $50,000 for an electronic crash reporting system to replace a paper reporting process, according to a second press release.
The grant will allow Goodyear to install TraCS software to all Patrol Division and Traffic Unit mobile computers and equip the vehicles with printers.
It’s designed to simplify record keeping and speed up sharing of reports with state agencies.
