PHOENIX – Police in Phoenix said one man shot at firefighters while another had tried to break into their personal vehicles Thursday night before they managed to escape.
Sgt. Tommy Thompson said in an email that no one was injured at Fire Station 58 near 47th Avenue and Dobbins Road, in Laveen Village.
Crew at the station told police they caught the man who had gotten inside the fenced yard around 8:30 p.m. Another man then began to shoot at them.
Both suspects took off heading south.
The crew had returned from a call.
Fire Capt. Rob McDade told KTAR News. 92.3 FM a couple of the crew members heard noises outside and went to the back lot of the site where the vehicles are parked.
They saw two people near the vehicles, and asked what they were doing.
“(Firefighters) really were not realizing (whether) these people were breaking into … vehicles, did they need emergency help?” McDade said.
The gunman fired multiple shots, the firefighters “hit the deck,” McDade said.
Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office deputies will take over the burglary investigation. Parts of Laveen are unincorporated, while other parts fall within Phoenix city limits.
No other details were available.
