PHOENIX – The West Valley suburb of Avondale is moving ahead with a mixed-use city core project that has been branded as The BLVD.

The City Council approved the plan during Monday’s meeting after months of public meetings and hearings, according to a press release.

The project, which was formerly called Avondale City Center, will cover 356 acres south of Interstate 10 approximately between 111th and 117th avenues.

The pedestrian-friendly plan calls for six districts and features a variety of shopping, entertainment, office and residential options.

The project also includes a sports center, medical campus, hotel and performing arts center, as well as outdoor gathering spaces.

“The plan was updated to reflect evolving market and other conditions, while fulfilling the Council’s vision and expectations for a quality unique and pedestrian-friendly area that will attract future development,” Jodie Novak, the city’s assistant director for Development and Engineering Services, said in the release.

The BLVD (pronounced boulevard) plan approved this week allows for incremental development to meet market demands, with reduced regulations and streamlined approvals to facilitate progress, according to the release.
