Clever Koi in Gilbert closed for extended period after kitchen fire
PHOENIX – A popular dining and drinking spot in downtown Gilbert is out of commission after its kitchen sustained “major damage” in a fire Wednesday afternoon.
Clever Koi posted a photo of the aftermath on social media and said nobody was injured by the fire. The photo shows a hole in the ceiling and debris on the floor.
Signs taped on the Asian-inspired restaurant’s windows said “we sustained some major damage” and could be closed “a month or longer” while repairs are made.
Mark Justus, public information officer for the Gilbert Fire Department, told ABC15 the fire ignited in the kitchen and spread to the ventilation system. He said the restaurant’s sprinkler system helped contain the fire until firefighters arrived and put it out.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation, he said.
Clever Koi’s Gilbert location, its second, debuted in 2016 in the Heritage District, the East Valley town’s bustling entertainment and dining hub along Gilbert Road.
The original Clever Koi remains open in Phoenix on Central Avenue north of Indian School Road.
