PHOENIX – On one of the hottest days of the year, crews from multiple agencies battled a large brush fire in north Phoenix near Lake Pleasant on Wednesday afternoon and into the evening.

The Phoenix, Daisy Mountain, and Peoria fire departments were on the scene, along with the Bureau of Land Management, with nearly 100 firefighters, according to a 2:30 p.m. update from Capt. Kenny Overton of the Phoenix Fire Department.

By Thursday morning, the New River blaze had consumed dry vegetation more than 800 acres between Lake Pleasant and Interstate 17.

One firefighter suffered an unspecified minor injury and taken to a hospital in stable condition, Overton said.

No structures were threatened.

Overton said an air tanker dropped a large amount of water on the blaze.

He said the fire’s forward progress was stopped by 6:30 p.m., but crews were expecting to work mop-up operations “for some time.”

The temperature in Phoenix reached 114 degrees Wednesday, breaking the record for the date and inching within 1 degree of the year’s high.
